US Border Searches of Electronic Devices Soar to Record 55,318 in 2025
In 2025, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) performed a record 55,318 electronic device searches, marking an 18% rise from the previous year. New federal directives have expanded the list of electronic devices subject to search to include smartwatches, sim cards, and flash drives. While "basic searches" can take place without suspicion, "advanced searches," which involve copying of the data, require reasonable suspicion of illegal activities or national security concerns. Interestingly, the searches of American citizens' electronic devices have risen almost 57% since 2023. In contrast, the rate of border searches in Canada is far lower and is declining as judicial oversight is more rigorous. Experts are suggesting to citizens to put their electronic device in airplane mode and close cloud-based applications, as failure to comply with a search can mean denial of entry into the US.
